DoshaBalancingBlends

The science of Ayurvedic medicine has been practiced in India for over five thousand years. Considered to be the mother of the Eastern systems of medicine, it is based on balancing the vital essences. The essences are categorized into three types or doshas:

  • Vata - air and space
  • Kapha - earth (water, oil, mass)
  • Pitta - metabolic fire and transformative energy
The vital essences are prevalent in all living things and well-being is achieved through balancing them. When one dosha is higher than another, the person (or plant or animal) will exhibit ailments that reflect that particular set of vital essences. For example, if a person is imbalanced in Vata, they will have a tendency towards health problems that relate to air and space - dry skin issues, weight loss, constipation, anxiety, insomnia, and the like.

Understanding what different ailments are expressing, and what energies (vital essences, the doshas) are imbalanced when we experience them, allows us to choose herbs and foods for healing based not only on their medicinal constituents, but their energy. When imbalanced, a person should consume those things that add to the body the opposite energy their symptoms represent, through which you bring the doshas back into balance, and support your body’s own natural immune system to function properly. (Not to mention achieve beautiful radiant skin, and physical and emotional well being!)

The blends below are listed under the doshas that are typically imbalanced when their intention is needed. Throughout the website, on the product details page for each blend, you will notice a V,P,K, (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) rating where the energy of the blend is described. A (-) means it lowers that dosha, (+) means it raises that dosha, and (=) means it is neutral to that dosha. For example: -V,+P,-K would describe a blend as balancing (lowering) to Vata, would raise Pitta and lower Kapha.

Kapha
Kapha represents earth, and is therefore described as cold, heavy and oily. An imbalance of this dosha is often expressed by the body through weight gain and fluid retention, slow digestion, oily skin issues such as cystic acne and blackheads, congestion, particularly of the lungs, and depression or lethargy. The Kapha type should emphasize a warm, dry and light diet, enjoying lots of warming spices, bitter greens dried fruits and lean proteins. A diet heavy in dairy, oily nuts or fried foods, baked goods and breads will only weigh Kapha down and aggravate these issues. The herbs employed in the following Kapha blends are warming, uplifting and tend to include diuretic energies that balance this dosha and address some of its’ most common issues.

Pitta
Pitta, being the dosha that represents metabolical fire and transformative energy, is known to be hot and moist. Ailments of Pitta imbalance are inflammatory – things like allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, heartburn, acid indigestion, rosacae, rashes, hives, migraine headaches and outbursts of anger. Pitta types should emphasize cooling and astringent qualities in their food and herb choices. Pungent, sour and salty foods like garlic, tomatoes, citrus fruits and fermented foods and drinks will only aggravate these fiery issues and in long term imbalance tend to affect the liver and central nervous system. The following blends employ herbs that have cooling energies and encourage the flow of toxicity and acidity out of the body. The blockage of this flow and the overabundance of fire is the underlying cause of Pitta imbalance, and marked by the common ailments the following blends are crafted to alleviate.

Vata
Vata, being air and space, is cold and dry. A Vata type should place an emphasis on warm, moist foods (like soups, oatmeal and steamed vegetables) and calming, grounding activities. When Vata is imbalanced and high, a person may exhibit ailments such as dry skin issues, constipation, feeling cold, anxiety and insomnia, joint stiffness and pain, weight loss and a general lack of groundedness. Cold, raw and dry foods, like popcorn, raw fruits and leafy vegetables, as well as bitter, drying herbs, will only add more air to this constitution and aggravate these issues. The following blends employ herbs that are warming and emollient (add moisture and viscosity) to the body, and address some of Vata’s most common ailments.
